வரியின் நடுவில் நான் நின்று “oh my god this is brilliant” என்று
Haha!

Dear Elanko,
I
know this is going to be a very messy letter because I really don’t
know where to start, what to type, or what to tell you. I have so many
things inside me.
You’re a celebrity in my
small little circle. Of course you’re a celebrity, but to me you feel
more than just an author. Sometimes like a big brother, sometimes like a
friend, sometimes like a depressed person trying to understand life
through writing.
I really wanted to talk to you
for a very long time. At least text you. At least write something to
you. But I couldn’t do it because I’m the kind of person who watched the
first seven Harry Potter movies and avoided the eighth movie for so
long just because I didn’t want it to end. That’s how sentimental I am.
So
in this case I felt like if I texted you, maybe I would somehow break
this relationship I have in my mind with you. As an author, as an older
brother who teaches me things without knowing, as a mentor, teacher, or
something I still cannot properly name.
I have
learned so many things because of you and also justified so many things
inside myself because of you. I don’t even know how to explain it
properly.
I still remember when you mentioned
Osho in Sambal Vanathil Maraikum Vairavar, if I’m not wrong because
honestly I’m not fully sure about the book tittle. I remember you saying
maybe people shouldn’t read him because once they do they might stop
getting excited about life. But you read him, so I did too. It gave me a
completely different perspective. I haven’t read a lot, but I still
went through it because of you.
Your Thailand
book is actually my current read and one thing that really stayed with
me was when you talked about thanking the people who left your life
because that made space for new people.
And another random thing, the way people who read a lot randomly talk about random things in conversations. That justified me so much for some reason.
And another random thing, the way people who read a lot randomly talk about random things in conversations. That justified me so much for some reason.
During
my early teenage years I read Mexico. I’m not really the type of person
who follows famous writers or searches for famous books. Usually I just
go to a library, pick something random, and start reading. We had
Mexico at home and I just fell in love with the way you write, the way
you love, the way you observe people.
Sometimes
when I read your writing it feels so simple, so normal, almost
effortless. And then suddenly in the middle of one random line I stop
and think “oh my god this is brilliant.” That’s the thing that surprises
me the most about your writing. Something so simple suddenly becomes so
deep and unforgettable.
Sorry to say this, but
I’m the type of person who judges book covers, never the writer. But
somehow you made me judge you too. Too deeply maybe. I keep connecting
your Mexico self, your Nanunnai Muthamidukaiyil Buddha
Sirithukkondirunthar self, and your Thailand Thai Nilam self.
Haha sorry, but I’m genuinely curious. Why are you like this?
And the way you write... I really don’t know. I genuinely don’t know.
And I’m sorry for saying this too, but honestly I never found your book covers interesting.
I know this letter is total shit but I genuinely don’t know how to talk to you.
I
wanted to tell you so many things but right now my mind feels
completely empty. Somehow today I got the courage to at least send this
mail.
These last couple of days I’ve been
meeting you again through Thailand. I still remember scenes from Mexico.
I think you were sitting on a hotel bed with your laptop open. I kind
of forgot the exact scene, but somehow I rewrote your stories into
different versions inside myself.
I’m really grateful for you, Elanko.
Even though you are more than 10,000 km away from me geographically, I feel like you are very close to my heart.
Thank you for being such an amazing author.
I’m
someone who always stands for humanity. During war I never blindly
supported the Sri Lankan government or Sri Lankan Tamil people. I always
believed more in humanity, lives, and people’s livelihoods. But your
stories made me think differently in certain ways.
This
may sound random, but this question has stayed in my mind for a really
long time. If I ever met you in real life, this is probably the first
thing I would ask you.
Why do you like “சாம்பல் வானம்” this much?
